Mark, You're correct. They widely use RTV based gaskets on timing covers and even sumps these days but it's not silicon as that crap nukes O2 sensors. I have always used GRR(B) grease on pinion type surfaces with excellent results but of course nothing will make a worn pinion seal other than replace it or use a speedie sleeve.
