Rear crossmember hole for 3 inch exhaust

Hey guys and gals,   just wondering what  size pipe to use when I cut the old exhaust hole out of my rear crossmember to fit my 3 inch exhaust system.  I have a piece of four inch pipe but it is 8mm thick!!!!!!!!!!!!  I would have to cut the entire guts out of the crossmember to make it fit, i.e from top to bottom.
