I can get access to a hole saw the right size,
that's no worries but I just wanted to know if the 8mm walled pipe that I want
to use as the replacement is overkill?

I would say that it is definitely woth the few dollars to
have the hole plasma-cut by an engineer and have them weld (or yourself) the
pipe in. Only an expensive and high quality hole-saw will work and it's
something that you-ll probably only do once.
