hi, 8 mm thick pipe is way too thick , i reckon any
way. can u get anything thinner? or maybe get it machined so that its only
3mm thick? if u look at the metal around it its only thin stufff any
way/

I can get access to a hole saw the right size,
that's no worries but I just wanted to know if the 8mm walled pipe that I want
to use as the replacement is overkill?

I would say that it is definitely woth the few dollars to
have the hole plasma-cut by an engineer and have them weld (or yourself)
the pipe in. Only an expensive and high quality hole-saw will work and
it's something that you-ll probably only do once.
