I think it is a good idea to brace and strengthen the rear shock towers to carry the increased load. On my car (project under de/con/struction) I'll be using Porsche 914 Bilstein Coilovers, which  probably won't have enough extended length for the std. mounting points+ use slightly lrger 3" springs (200#).   Some of the shocks from Carrera or Aldan would work well,are actually very good value  and 21/2 " springs are cheap and avail in any rate virtually. Higher end will have adjustable bumb/ rebound etc.. I would check out any company that deals with stock cars/ pro street etc.. and determine how much wheel travel, spring rate required etc..  Also look at  summitracing.com or stockcarproducts.com(excellent site) or hotrod.com.
