Yeah Cam, I definitely wont be undertaking rear coilovers in the near future.  I didn't realise that it was going to be such a huge job!  I'll wait a few years until I rebuild the car again before I look at doing this seriously.  I think the effort would be worth it as having adjustable suspension all the way around would be something else!!!! But anyway thanks for all the advice as I had no idea about rear coilovers until I asked the other day.

Don't want to second guess what Daniel intends to do....but it sounds like the coil over conversion for the rear (on a 1600 anyway) is for the most serious of race cars.

I'd agree that with the requirement of at least 700 lb springs (probably even more cause the lower shock mounting point is even further back on the pivot point than the factory spring seat) in the back due to the leverage on the A arms, big cut and shut style mods will be required or risk having the shock top knock out the back windscreen when it comes up through the shocker tower and rear parcel shelf :))

As always it depends on what you want out of the car and it's application.  If one is thinking about doing it for the street I would suggest a valium and half an hour with a drunk fat chick just to get back to reality.

For racing it is a good conversion however if you are going to the trouble you may as well build a spaceframe and do it properly.  I have done it for a rally car years ago to keep within PRC regs and luckily the mate who I did it for crashed on the way to work.  Interesting story because it was very nearly the ultimate P510 setup for club racing/rallying.  He crashed because we removed the heater core etc (heavy) leaving the heater facade as per rules.  After spending close to $20 000 and months and months building this hybrid he wouldn't spring $50 for a demister strip on the windscreen.  Then he ignores everyone's advice and drives to work one morning (button clutch etc - not a roadie) and windscreen fogs up so bad he hits light pole and spins into path of truck.  Lucky that roll cage was well built because entire vehicle was destroyed and all he got was light concussion and sore knee.

He also became a very lonely man because we all gave him the arse for being a moron.  Fools like that kill people

Don't want to sound like a kill joy, but for the expense and effort of installing c/overs on a set-up like the 1600, do you think it is justifiable?

rear coil overs (proper coil overs not converted chapman struts) can be used however you have to reinforce the top of the shock tower substantially.  If you really want to do a good job fabricate turrets (ala factory BDA Escort)

Subject: rear suspension queries

Dear list,

is it possible to get coil over rear shockies for the rear of a datsun 1600 so I could have adjustable damping and spring height.  I'm going to order some koni adjustables for the front ( as I'm sick of my leaking oil filled units ) of my datto but was wondering what options I have for the rear.  I want fully adjustable suspension all the way around and figure that's not too hard for the front but I am hazy as to whats available for the rear.

Cheers
