Zac,
It sounds like worn or loose control arm
rubbers allowing the struts to move back or forward under brakes in either
direction. As you say you can feel it through the brake pedal, then some part of
the suspension is moving under brakes and this is the most loaded suspension
point under brakes in either direction.
