so does that mean, all the current of when the
starter kicks over (120amp peak or something big like that isnt it??) will be
going through my meter??

The main part of an ammeter is the shunt which is a calibrated
resistor. All you are measuring whether (and how much) current is coming
from or going to the battery.
The shunt has to be spliced into the
positive battery cable and all the current has to go through it.
Make
sure that you spliced into the battery cable and not into a load
cable!
You can't have other wires coming off the battery terminal or
the readings will be inaccurate. Also you can't have it in parallel with
the battery positive cable or it won't work at all.
The sensing wires
from the shunt go to the ammeter - with the correct polarity. If it is set
up like this then it should work.
