No, it should go the the shunt, which should be separate from the meter! The shunt is just a piece of copper of a calibrated resistance. The meter just measures the voltage drop across the shunt (millivolts only)
There are 4 wires to the shunt. one beefy one from the battery, one beefy one to the starter, two sensing wires to the meter/gauge. Didn't it come with instructions? Check the back of the gauge, it should say something like 'use with 100A shunt' or whatever.
