No, it should go the the shunt, which should be separate from the meter!
The shunt is just a piece of copper of a calibrated resistance.
The meter just measures the voltage drop across the shunt (millivolts only)

There are 4 wires to the shunt. one beefy one from the battery, one beefy one to the
starter, two sensing wires to the meter/gauge.

Didn't it come with instructions?
Check the back of the gauge, it should say something like 'use with 100A shunt' or
whatever.

so does that mean, all the current of when the starter kicks over (120amp peak or something big like that isnt it??) will be going through my meter??

The main part of an ammeter is the shunt which is a calibrated resistor.
All you are measuring whether (and how much) current is coming from or going to the battery.

The shunt has to be spliced into the positive battery cable and all the current has to go through it.

Make sure that you spliced into the battery cable and not into a load cable!

You can't have other wires coming off the battery terminal or the readings will be inaccurate.
Also you can't have it in parallel with the battery positive cable or it won't work at all.

The sensing wires from the shunt go to the ammeter - with the correct polarity.
If it is set up like this then it should work.

hi, i betchya the amp meter will only work when u are cranking it over?

you will have to connect it  thru the wire that comes of the back of ya alternator tht goes to battery,...

just installed a el cheapo amp meter, hooked it up how it suggests.....is series with the hot wire off the solenoid. and it does nothing, doesnt move at all.....any ideas???
