On a
1600 the white wire from the alternator connects to the battery via the the main
cranking battery line to the starter motor. It just saves a bit of wire doing it
like that. Kris did a diagram on an earlier post that was spot
on.

so does that mean, all the current of when the
starter kicks over (120amp peak or something big like that isnt it??) will be
going through my meter??

The main part of an ammeter is the shunt which is a
calibrated resistor. All you are measuring whether (and how much) current
is coming from or going to the battery.
The shunt has to be spliced
into the positive battery cable and all the current has to go through
it.
Make sure that you spliced into the battery cable and not into a
load cable!
You can't have other wires coming off the battery
terminal or the readings will be inaccurate. Also you can't have it in
parallel with the battery positive cable or it won't work at all.
The
sensing wires from the shunt go to the ammeter - with the correct
polarity. If it is set up like this then it should
work.
