In the short term, running on ordinary unleaded would require some
fiddling with the timing to avoid pinking but running on
premium/Optimax/etc would present no problems.

In the longer term, valve seat recession would be a problem, esp with
an early head that had the original bronze valve seats. Some later
heads came with steel seats and this would not be such a problem.

All of the above assumes you have an L26 with the original head.
L28's do not suffer any of these problems as they are designed to run
on unleaded.

IMHO, if you have the original L26, then just run the thing till it
dies and in the meantime either get hold of an L28 to cover that
eventuallity, or build up an L26 head (E88) to run on unleaded to
replace the original. Personally I'd recommend the L28 option :-)
