David,

It is a PCV (positive crankcase Ventilation) valve and it can cause problem
if it gets gummed up and sticky. It should be soaked in petrol every major
service ~20K. I just can't recall how the valve is located on the L24 and
Steven & the 6 cylinder ppl will know for sure. Underneath the manifolds
there will be a pipe coming out of the block with a hose on it that goes to
the inlet manifold. The PCV valve is a one way device that shut when there
is vacuum in the inlet manifold and opens to suck the fumes out of the sump
when there is no vac in the manifold. They usually fail on the vac side and
leak so causing rough idle.

I found an article that explains how it works -
http://www.hastingsfilter.com/engineering/tsb_94-2r.html

Ignore the crap about "you shouldn't clean them" - this crowd are in the
business of flogging us a new PCV valve every other service - yeah right.
The truth of the matter is they practically last forever.

regards
Terry

Subject: L24 smoke.. PCB valve?

G'day All,

I got my old man to drive the my 240Z and I followed him to see when it
blew smoke, and it blows absolutely none, as in not a whisp, unless you
give it the absolute boots and then it does this big dump of smoke. I am
also not convinced its coming out the exhaust, my old man said it might
be something called a PCB valve? He said if this is jammed the sump may
be pressuried causing it to leak out somewhere then fall onto the exhaust
or whatever.. I dunno. But I do know its using around 4L of oil every
1000km or so. Is the PCB valve thing a possibility? And can anyone be
bothered quickly explaining how/why it works and what i should do to
check & replace it.
Thanks,

Dave
