James,
Here in Europe the first 510's came as either 1300 or 1600, both L series
engines. The 1300 was dropped in favour of the 1400, possibly due to
rationalisation of the range as the PB110 (the L series powered version of
the 1200) was using the L14 as well. Here all the sedans were four door and
all wagons were 1600 powered. The SSS four door sedans were sold in some
parts of Europe (but not here in the UK unfortunately).

It's interesting to note that out of the few 510 sedans I've heard of here
all, except one, have been either 1300 or 1400. It's also strange that
nearly ever 510 I see when in Norway is a '68 model with the early tail
lights and clap hand wipers and most seem to be 1300 powered.

I believe the 510 was sold in south American as a 1500 with an A15 OHV and a
non-IRS rear end.

I reckon that Nissan might have considered the 1300 and 1400 models might
have been a bit to gutless for Australian tastes (especially the 1300...they
are pretty slow). In Europe there were, at the time very few large engines
or V8 powered cars except for expensive luxury models and 1000cc to 1500cc
was the norm for a family car.
Did you guys get Escorts and the like with little engines like 1100cc?
