Have a read of this article - it's about a 4 cylinder motor cycle engine but
it's fairly generic and quite similar to the way Nissan lubricate the L
series engine. The cylinder walls are lubricated from excess oil from the
conrod bearings and it is being splashed around from underneath the pistons.

How does the oil get onto the cylinder so the piston is lubricated?

No I'm serious...  when I was little I was told that it "splashes up
there"... but now, decades later I'm wondering... how does it get up there?
