its the  shaft thingy which has the copper wire  wound around it.
and  each end is supported  by a  small bush.
this holds the armature  by a tiny amount , away from the  field coils.
 where the armature spins, the field coils go around it.
if  one or both of the bushes are worn, this causes the armature to  touch
the field coils, and can flatten the battery pretty quick, and turns over
slow.
look for scratch marks on the armature.
