Adam,
From my perspective being an "Auto sparky" I would suggest you
ditch the multimeter and grab a test light as you will just confuse yourself
with a meter. Don't mean to imply that you don't know what your doing but
test lights are easier to understand for someone that doesn't deal with
electricity all the time. Please don't take any offence to that (none was
meant). Now - with the starter back in the vehicle all connected as it was
grab your trusty test light and firstly put it directly across the negative
and positive battery terminals. Whilst connected have someone attempt to
crank the vehicle. The test light should not go out (may dim slightly). If
this is so then put the test light from the negative terminal on the battery
over to the body of the starter(earth). If the test light does nothing
that's great but if it lights up you have found your problem - A bad earth
from motor to body or motor to battery. Ok lets assume the test light did
nothing - Now connect the trusty test light from the negative battery
terminal and with the other end hold it on the main positive stud on the
starter(positive cable) NOTE: hold it on whilst someone attempts to crank
the engine. If it went out you have found your problem (intermittent open
circuit in the battery cable or bad connections at either end). If it stays
alive then you have eliminated that. Now for your final test (just in case
you haven't solved your problem yet) Connect the test light from the
negative battery terminal at one end and with the other hold it on the
activation terminal whilst someone attempts to start the vehicle. This
should come alive and stay alive whilst the key is in the crank position.
Depending on your ignition barrel, some datsuns if turned to far around on
crank this supply drops out. If you have any trouble understanding these
tests I would be happy for you to give me a call and ill go through it with
you on the phone. Just let me know and ill give you the number off list.
