Speaking of wheel bearings, I just purchased an 86 IRS Gazelle and it was driven 100 km's to my house. The driver complained of a noise in the front and a constant scraping sound, "the wheeel bearings need adjusting. After paying him for the car I jacked the front wheel up and immediatly the bottom of the wheel moved about 100mm towards the car centre with the weight off it. When the wheel was removed the outer bearing had gone completly and the axle nut was fused to the axle. The inner bearing still had some resemblance of structure but the front was all gone.
