Yeah... When my wheel bearing went it looked pretty bad when I pulled it
out. There were bearings popping out, the cage looked more like a oval
than a circle. It was making a noise that sounded like the axle was
going to seize up and send the car spinning...

Have you pulled the wheel bearing out to make sure its in alright
condition? Also make sure the wheels are aligned if they arent already
and check the steering gear.

Subject: RE: wheel bearing adjustment

Speaking of wheel bearings, I just purchased an 86 IRS Gazelle and it
was
driven 100 km's to my house. The driver complained of a noise in the
front
and a constant scraping sound, "the wheeel bearings need adjusting.
After
paying him for the car I jacked the front wheel up and immediatly the
bottom
of the wheel moved about 100mm towards the car centre with the weight
off
it. When the wheel was removed the outer bearing had gone completly and
the
axle nut was fused to the axle. The inner bearing still had some
resemblance
of structure but the front was all gone.

Cheers,

P.S. He was doing 100 kph on the ring road as well for about 25
km's!!!!!
