Mark,

I pretty much agree with the diagnosis of your problem - it is most likely
to be crook BR or coil connections. There is another problem that can also
be intermittent that will give the same symptoms but with a technical
difference. Did you happen to notice if the tacho bounces around -above 0
when you are cranking when trying to start? If it happens again, then
observe the tacho as it will tell you on which side of the coil you have a
problem. If the tacho needle bounces around when cranking then an ignition
problem is on the Positive side i.e. BR or coil, ignition switch for sure.
If the tacho is motionless when cranking then an ignition problem is on the
switching side i.e. -ve coil, points, condenser etc. I've noticed that the
last couple of sets of Bosch packed Hitachi GH207 points I've seen have a
much larger than usual nut on the insulated pigtail connection and this nut
if not seated absolutely flat i.e. horizontal then it is possible for it to
just touch the points return spring and this will short out the points - no
switching via the contacts, no start. Honda Civic (72) ventilated or genuine
Nissan Hitachi points are far superior to the Bosch packed made in God knows
where variety that you get from Supercheap and Kmart.

regards
Terry

You might find that cleaning up all the connections and making sure
everything is crimped and plugged properly might even solve it.
