This 1/3 of rpm boost theory is something you would expect from a factory
setup. Many high performance turbo setups will boost much later. For example most
of the 10sec skylines you see dont boost until over 5000rpm and redline around
9000rpm.With the ca18det being a bit smaller than the sr20det they can take a
bit more rpm to boost the larger turbo from the GTiR which has a turbine a/r of
.86 which is quite a bit bigger than the standard .49 from the ca18det.The
compressor also has a larger a/r of .6 compared to .48 from the ca18det.Combine
this with larger comp and turbine wheels and you are going to get some lag
increase. If you were to be running consistently high boost level of around 20psi
then i would probably live with the extra lag as these turbos can flow some air
thru them at this level. But if you were to only run say 15psi or less then you
would probably be better off going for the .64 a/r turbine housing off a s13
sr20det.This would help to spool things up a little quicker. Some people even use
the small .49a/r turbine housings from the ca18det on the larger turbo but ive
never tried this.Creating a volume in the actuator line can help to spool things
a bit quicker as can a 15psi actuator and a gated bleed valve. Its always a good
idea to cheek for wastegate creep on a dyno under load conditions.ive seen some
turbos that wont boost above 15psi simply becuase the back pressure has reached
7psi and just forces open the 7psi actuator.
