I did mine last week without undoing the exhaust...
It depends on how much arseing about you want to do as I found the rear
bracket bolts sit just above the exhaust and this makes for interesting
times.

i have read that you need to undo the exhaust manifold to get the gearbox
out
is this correct ?
my exhaust is 2 & 1/2 inch welded to extractors so can't be removed easily
