I had a plastic one but it eventually cracked. I haven`t heard of Optimax causing starving problems (but have heard that it can damage rubber hoses/components). Drain the tank and blow out the lines with compressed air ( just make sure you disconnect hose from carby end), replace the fuel filter and try again.  If you want the best filtration use a metal cased filter to suit an EFI system. These filter down a lot further than the normal fuel filters.
