Yeah datsun 1600 is the intended recipient

I am currently torn between the whole historic thing & just going improved
production which free's up a lot of stuff.....

historic your stuck with mostly original "casings" but internals are free
so stuck with r160 diff housing but free ratios etc
same with gearbox......stuck with 4 speed, but any gears u want are OK
in some ways it seems to make it harder & more expensive not cheaper.......

one of the guys who runs an historic 1600 reckons the bigger diffs are to
heavy
and i suppose saving weight is good.....but there cant be much difference
can there ?
maybe a couple of Kilo's at worst i suppose ?

I am wondering if it will end up being easier & cheaper to just go improved
production
there is certainly much more freedom.

Oh & you can advertise on improved production cars, but not on historics !
I currently run in "road registered" class.

I really fancy the idea of a 5.1 diff ratio as a cheap speed maker for
climbing those damn hills !

QLD hillclimb champs this weekend 5th & 6th Gramzow rd Mt Cotton (south of
Brisbane)
Saturday you might get in free as its practise day, but Sunday there will
definately be a charge
sorry, but i dont know how much, club meetings are usually free for
spectators.

Believe it or not the old 1600 is not always the slowest car there even
though it has still got stock running gear & suspension !, QLD champs though
should see some quick cars turn up !

I am rambling again so better go :)

anybody turns up on the weekend come for a chat if you want
white datsun 1600 no.66

cheers Jeff

I've got a list of ratios avail for each diff R160, R180 , R190, R200 at
home.
I'm pretty sure a 5.1 for an R160 would be hard to find and the bigger
ones won't fit in the R160 case.
I believe a bigger diff is better in a 1600 (is this what its going
into?) as they benefit from the extra weight down back.
I would go for the R160 subaru LSD in 4.1 or 4.4 with either a Z 5 speed
or similar (depending on the Historic regs?) as these would be easier to
find than the Datto ones in R160 size.

this might sound like a stupid question.....i know i know
But can you put a better ratio say 5.1 in the original datsun 1600 diff
housing ? or do you need to actually change the whole diff ?

two reasons for asking this question

1.0 I am still trying to keep my car historic (which means original
housing, but not internals - go figure) 2.0 i have been told the other
diffs are very heavy & can affect car balance

anybody know or got an opinion ?

Subject: RE: Installing Subaru LSD

mark,

ive looked at a Subaru R180 from a STI recently, my interest is whether
the datsun r160 'axles' will fit the splines in the centre or whether i
would have to have something made to work

the 4.11 R180 LSD is only $750 (clutch packed)

once i have a chance, my plan is to try some datto shafts on the r180
and see what fits

can any one else shed some light on this?
