The guy I use has a device like a big dish washer with a high pressure
pump and soapy water jets to blast from all directions as the support
platform spins. The parts are not immersed and heads only have to be in
for about an hour and they are squeaky clean. It messes up cam bearings
in blocks though.

Aluminium alloy heads are 'cold tanked' in solutions usually based on 
Methylene Chloride with napthene and other additives....'Carbo Clean' 
is one brand name.  Nasty stuff.

OTOH cast iron heads and blocks are 'hot tanked' in alkaline 
solutions which would actually dissolve an aluminium head given long 
enough....
