I
built the $20 kit and it's pretty crappy. Not only could it sense the o2
reading, It seemed to also be able to sense when my hand was near the circuit
board, or the wire running to the o2 sensor.....
Use it
as a guide only!!!!
All
these o2 meters do is measure the voltage produced by the sensor, the sensor has
a platinum rod inside which produces a voltage when hot and will give off
between 0 and 1 volt depending on how much oxygen is present. Ideal o2
conditions are around 0.7 volts. They can only detect a very narrow range, like
11:1 thru to 15:1 or something. A typical car unit is around $80 to $150 brand
new.
If you
want accurate results, you need a wide-band o2 sensor like they use on the real
o2 tuning meters, the wide-band sensor can detect a larger range of readings and
is far more accurate. These cost a hell of a lot more than the narrow band type.
Don't quote me but I think they are $400 to $700 just for the sensor.
