Subject: RE: Cheap Air/Fuel ratio meter
and sensor for L-series
I
built the $20 kit and it's pretty crappy. Not only could it sense the o2
reading, It seemed to also be able to sense when my hand was near the
circuit board, or the wire running to the o2 sensor.....
Use it as a guide only!!!!
All these o2 meters do is measure the voltage produced by the sensor,
the sensor has a platinum rod inside which produces a voltage when hot and
will give off between 0 and 1 volt depending on how much oxygen is present.
Ideal o2 conditions are around 0.7 volts. They can only detect a very narrow
range, like 11:1 thru to 15:1 or something. A typical car unit is around $80
to $150 brand new.
If
you want accurate results, you need a wide-band o2 sensor like they use on
the real o2 tuning meters, the wide-band sensor can detect a larger range of
readings and is far more accurate. These cost a hell of a lot more than the
narrow band type. Don't quote me but I think they are $400 to $700 just for
the sensor.
hi, might pay to get a 3
wire ego sensor from a ea falcon , the heating element will
make the actaul sensor. start reading better, sooner, than waiting for the
exh to bring it up to operating specs.
the a/f meter from jaycar cost about 70
$??
there is another kit from jaycar for about
$20 or soo, which just has a row of leds...
btw has any body looked at the latest
jaycar catalog ?
look at catalog

bs-5080
kc-5382
kc-5380

they are a heap o f electronic
kits for efi cars....
thing is , i actually ordered the book, but
they said the book wont be ready till september (even though its
advertsied in this year s catalog.

Good idea! I've had similar thought for the
same reason(s).
Keep us informed how you go building and
installing it, and how it works if you succeed.
I have read that the o2 sensor in the
Hyundai Excell with the twin cam head is a high quality unit for
sensing. Could be a good deal from a wrecker.
Others may add their knowledge on
this.

Subject: Cheap Air/Fuel ratio
meter and sensor for L-series
Hi all,
I want to set up my L4 powered 1600 with
a cheap O2 sensor and A/F ratio meter.
Is there anything I need to know? I see
heaps of cheap O2 sensors on Ebay, brand new starting at around
AUS$30-$40. There is a Bosch #11051 (OE type before catalyst single
wire) O2 sensor listed as suitable for an L-series 4-cylinder. Are
these any good? I'm just running twin SU's on one car with an
L18 and twin Weber 45's on another with a L20B and want to swap
between them for tuning. I thought I'd just get a Jaycar LED A/F
meter kit and DIY it.
I should be able to put the whole thing
together for less than $150 I reckon.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Rob
