Put your multimeter on 20k ohms, When you touch the probes together you get something, either a zero or a full reading.
You then attach the red probe to the signal wire, the black probe to the earth. If you don't get a signal, then click the multimeter to different positions until you get something like a full number to 1 or 2 decimal places or whatever. Then you look at what range you're in, so if you get a reading of 2.7 in the 20k range it means 2.7k or 2700 ohms, if your in the 20 ohm range, and you get a reading of 2.7 then it's just 2.7 ohms, if your in the 20meg.ohms range and it reads 2.7 then it's 2.7 million ohms.
