Can't say I am familiar with the specifics of the car, but it sounds as if the linkage is jamming. Same thing used to happen with the rods in the HQ gear box, and was fixed by sort of shimming the rods apart with washers. Decidedly agricultural I know! Although the movement of the car might indicate something else... Do you HAVE to move the car to get it to jam?
