I can vouch for the air-bag thing. My wife hit a chain-wire fence in her toyota soarer doing about 60km/h. The airbag went off and smashed her face up real bad. It was mostly cuts and bruises, lots of swelling, black eye, etc. but the new soarer we bought just so happens to not come standard with an airbag. :)
 
The research they do on airbags with test-dummies involves a floppy dummy, that has no muscles clamping it to the steering wheel, and hence will smash it's face on the wheel every time. A real person, driving correctly has two outstretched arms clamped at 10-2 position and most people have arms strong enough to resist the force of their own bodyweight moving forward. Also, most sane people will grip the wheel tighter during the moments before a smash, mainly because of the adrenalin rush you get, with enough adrenalin you can turn the mildest granny into a super-hulk for a few nanoseconds. Enough to save your life / prevent injury. Hence why lots of people get muscle aches and pains after a smash.
 
Plus, the airbags cost megabucks to reset / reinstall during crash repair, and this often leads to a fairly mildly damaged / repairable car being written off, simply because the airbags in the dash, steering wheel, b pillar ripping the interior of the car apart and buring holes in seats, etc.

Have anther look death spear would inpail if you sit in the door frame.
 
But not if you sat in the seat.
 
Plus think about it,,If you rammed a brick wall that hard for the colum to go thru ya cheast cos ya sitting in the door frame,, you would have to be doing 200Mph....
 
Now if the colum ant on a angle why does the uni in the collapsable joint wear out?.
 
More people die from air bags than they save... Know fact..

Its called a death spear because its a solid bar pointed at your stomach/chest area. If you have a head on crash you can be impaled by the non collapsable column can be driven towards you as the front crumples.   Also the reason we now have air bags in the steering wheel.

Yes the uni on the 610 / H510 coupe are a funny size and very had to buy here in NZ,,as our cars didnt have this type.
 
People call the soild a death spear...why? it is angled.\

G’day all

 

I am strengthening my old group G P510 shell and I am going to get all the fabrication done whilst on the rotisserie, for ease of planning and fitting.  The steering column I have always used is a spear type, connected into the steering box.  I plan to fit an inline steering quickener in the column and hence wouldn’t mind a collapsible with couplings to the steering box.

 

Has anyone had any experience in sourcing a collapsible column that has coupling connections to the steering box?
