It's in Des Moines, Iowa. Interior damn near perfect. Runs perfect. body perfect, except for a bit of rust just starting to show around the jack points. I was planning to drive it forever, at least. Not sure what to do now.

so where is this car located?  It might be time to call in the klebster.

Unfortunately, he is quite correct. Normally this ends the life of the car.

Actually around here even if the mount area breaks (and not the bar itself)
it is usually due to rot in the firewall and the general wisdom is that it's
not cost-effective to repair it.

I am afraid that your mechanic is trying to steer you to that conclusion by
what he has been saying. It's a no-win situation for him, if he charges you
for all that work and it only lasts a short time he knows he will look bad.
