the lowest I have is 2 amps. Its got a timer but you can set it to hold. I should probably just use 2amp and leave it on hold all night.

It's common for a lead acid battery that's been discharged too far to have high internal resistance (and therefore charge at a low rate) until the charge starts to come up. It doesn't mean the battery is toast!

Leave it overnight on the lowest setting your charger has, and see how it is the next day. I use a 1 amp charger myself.

So I just dont understand all this amps and such. When do you want to charge at 40, 20, and 2? 40 is the fastest charge. I just dont understand how it all works. I am stupid when it comes to electrical stuff.

Discharging the battery swells the plates, and high capacity batteries have been known to fracture with a complete discharge (deep cycle batteries have more space between the plates to prevent this, that's why they are larger for the same capacity). Battery is toast if it will not accept the correct charge and rate. Get a new one.

alternator output if fine, 13.7 volts or so. I started it out on the charger at 40 amps, after a while it went to overload and turned off the charge. This charger when it goes over 17 volts I believe it cuts it off as overload. Turned it down to 20 amps, when a little longer then same thing. Im having to charge it at the 2 amp setting for it not to overload. I have never understood all that. I have some batteries I can charge at 40, some I have to set at 20 or they will OL, and some I have to charge at 2 or they will OL. What is the deal with that? ARe the ones that have to be charged at the lower rate goint bad?

in case you care, it was 9 here this morning, car sitting all weekend, dino oil, not plugged in, 190D started after 15 seconds of glow, no problems. The 140 SD would not start though, battery dead. Its on the charger now. Its only about 3 years old but Im thinking its going bad. It was dead a few weeks ago, I charged it and its been fine since. AT taht time one of the lights inside was left on I think. Maybe that was not the problem after all since its dead again.

Discharging the battery completely (by having a light on) puts a severe
strain on it, perhaps the one "that broke the camel's back." If the
battery froze at the same time, that will kill it very quickly. Don't
forget to check belt tension and alternator output voltage under load.
