Hi Wilton - this might not apply so some of the far more tech savvy folks
can help here.  I have tried a couple of times to use devices that were not
meant for USB with a USB adaptor and it never worked. Might be there is some
transfer rate problem.  I have no idea, but with the price of storage now
I'd sure go with new.

BTW, Ed, I found an item on CablesToGo.com that SOUNDS/LOOKS like it may 
facilitate using my old HD as an external USB HD on the new one.  It's an HD

"enclosure", supposedly with cables for conversion to USB.  It's item # 
29565, USB 2 Hard Drive Enclosure for 3.5in. Drive; third item down from top

on their external hard drive page.
