In addition to the Garmin I have a very old Magellan Meridian Gold.  It has
a B&W display and old topo non-3D maps.  But it is superior to the new
Garmin NUVI for off-road use.  I have upgraded the firmware a few times and
it is still very useful (but does not do routing or voice like a proper
automotive GPS).

What kind is that?  I was thinking to get one for my bike, but the 
bike-specific Garmins are muy spendy.
