Steve,

The 740 is also a great car. Volvo even manufactured a 740 diesel for a
while. The engine had two timimg belts!

The volvo diesel with two belts was made by Audi/VW - same as the basic engine used in the '70s-early '80s Rabbit/Jetta with a couple of cylinders added and timing functions divided between TWO belts. The aluminum heads developed cracks - especially in the turboed version. If cared for, it could deliver a lot of service (but was MUCH less robust than the OM61x engines and required more and more expensive maintenance). I had a friend at Pitt that has owned a mid '80s 760 turbodiesel since new and now has well over 250kmi (probably closer to 300kmi now) on it - replaced the head 6-7 years ago. Fuel consumption in the low 30s as I recall. We compared notes on our diesels. Mine held up a bit better and maintenance was less expensive. His rusted a little sooner. For our purposes, they were economical for our use when compared to similar gasoline cars.
