Slave is external to the bellhousing. I checked the fluid last night, no detectable loss of fluid...

If it just tastes oily then it's oil. If there is a bitter taste then brake fluid is present = slave cylinder leak. Then again there may be so little brake fluid in the mix that you might not taste it. Is the slave cylinder even inside the bell housing?
