In FWDs, I've had the telescoping tripod joints on the inboard end wear out enough to induce vibration through the steering wheel at speed. Usually well beyond 100,000 miles when that happens. IIRC, on old Saab 99s you could swap the tripod cups from right to left to get a new driving face for the joint.
