The earlier cars had the air cleaner on top of the turbo (which was not sitting on top of a trap oxidizer). There was a hard plastic U, sort of like a big sink trap, that looped from the air cleaner outlet to the turbo compressor inlet. Each end of the U had a thick rubber seal in the end where it plugged onto the filter box or the turbo.
Apparently the 1985 is a lot different. That 300SD looks to have a rubber flex hose with hose clamps at each end.
