The "coolant glowplugs". Mine has 3, the idea is to get them to heat the coolant a little faster. IIRC they don't come on until the engine is running and are of debatable value.

My ex's '00 diesel bug had a 5th glow plug as part of the climate control that comes on with the other four to heat up the cabin.
