Mercedes had become a common German name, but it is not strictly Lutheran. My
Gramma's cousin (German Catholic) was named Mercedes. I don't think it is
popular any more. But the origin remains the same...the devotion to Our Lady
of Mercy pre-dates Lutheranism...it's medieval. Probably popularized by the
Mercedenarians - a Catholic order of monks that would exchange themselves to
the Muslims for the release of Christian prisoners (during the Crusade era).

Kind of like "Christopher" it means Christ-bearer but lots of
athiests/agnostics (like my parents) name their kids Christopher just becuase
they like the name, it has just entered the culture.

Just putting my 2 cents in, not requiring anyone to believe in patron saints.
:-)

  Chris

P.S. Back to Jellinek - Would like to know why he was imprisoned. He was a
diplomat of an enemy nation, but you don't normally imprison diplomats...they
normally are withdrawn, I think. I wonder if he was accused of spying.
