Yes, the expansion valve is in the engine compartment.

If the new evaporator leaks you have a problem, but otherwise any leaks are in the engine compartment.

I would flush the rest of the system and covert it to PAG oil (dump the compressor out and add 120 mL PAG oil), add 2 oz of oil for the now fairly clean condenser, and replace ALL the o-rings. These are the most like sources of leaks and by now are in poor shape.

You should consider replacing the short line between the condenser and the receiver/dryer as well as these are the most likely to leak in my experience.

And have the shop install a new receiver/dryer immediately prior to charging. Saves all sorts of problems.

With a clean condenser and a proper charge the AC will work just fine on R134a -- they came filled with it after 1992 anyway.
