VW and Daimler made a statement a couple weeks ago about confusing
warantee statements about biodiesel. in europe bio diesel is made to
a particular standard. minnesota dropped its mandate because it
couldnt get reliable sourcing for bio meeting its standards which
almost mirrored the euro standard from comments others have made.
the B20 blend seems to be about the most that anyone will provide
warrantee coverage for on north american bio fuels.
there is still a lot of debate out there on the subject. one
discussion has it that if the standards on bio fuel get tightened up
there will be only about half available. that actually scares me.
not because of the less factor but what the h### standard are they
making the stuff to???!!

My gut feeling: It's too soon to mandate this kind of thing. The
biodiesel industry needs to mature to the point where it can provide a
consistent, inexpensive product before anyone is required to use
it. I
also think wanting to subsidize local farmers is the wrong reason
to do
it -- but that doesn't mean there aren't valid reasons. I think it
would be nice to see biodiesel offered as an alternative lubricity
additive for low-sulfur fuel, for example. (The fight over the
lubricity additive that *has* been mandated, and what it does to
pipelines, is a whole 'nother discussion.)
