1986, Okemos, Michigan. Terry Kildea buys the Amoco station across from Randy Markham's "Randy's Mobil Mart". They got in a price war. Nobody was allowed to undercut, or even match, Randy's price. I was running on empty, figured I'd buy gas from Kildea's on the way home. When I got there, I considered myself lucky to get through the intersection alive. Never looked at the price signs. Saw on the news after I got home that the price had dropped to NEGATIVE five cents or so. (they were paying you to take it). I bought gas in the next town, paid full price. I believe it was probably around 20 cents per gallon when I passed the madness in Okemos. I wasn't about to park in a major road for 1/2 hour or more to save eight bucks on a tank of gas.
