Well it is possible he does need the lift pump, if the valves are bad on that car. But the kit for the lift pump is only about $12. I had to spend about that much again for the special size metric socket, and you need a couple orings not in the kit.

When the transfer pump crapped out on the 240D, it would start, but would not get up to speed and wanted to die in place of idle. autopsy showed the prastic valves were chipped all along the edges. a kit later, and alles ist gut.

You don't need the whole lift pump, just the the primer pump that screws into the top of the lift pump
