Many of the larger air handlers have two independent sets of heat strips
powered by separate circuits.  Typically, one heat strip and the blower (and
transformer) are on one circuit and the other heat strip (possibly higher
wattage) is on the a second circuit.  These "heat strips" are actually coils
of high-temp wire (like nichrome) inside the duct held by ceramic insulator
standoffs.  Here's what one looks like:

There should also be a high-temp switch on the assembly that cuts power to
the element if it gets too hot (which it will if the blower stops).
Two-stage thermostats have two heat outputs (w1 and w2) to engage the two
sets of heat strips independently, as needed to maintain room temperature.
