When you can get yourself in trouble is when you have worse traction in back -- for example, two new tires in front and two relatively bald ones in the back, on a wet road. Then you're likely to get "ambushed" in a corner.

Another NASTY situation is two summer tires with plenty of tread up front and two studded snows on the rear on a WET surface. Talk about the rear trying to pass the front of the car!
