For many years I've thought that synthetic diesel would eventually be the answer. Basically zero pollution, could use the methane from our landfills, Alaska tundra, coal mines, etc. But the oil companies wouldn't have a monopoly on it so not much has been done there. If you move the businesses out to the urban sprawl, then you recreate the working communities, but zoning departments don't have any guts about such things. Just my .02.
