It's amazing how long some of those old birds keep working -- someone hauling freight crashed a Convair 240 last fall in northern Illinois I think, built in 1951 or so and still running piston engines!
The DC-10 wasn't the worlds best designed or most advanced aircraft for it's time, but like all Douglas aircraft, it's pretty tough. Lockheed's L1011 was a much better design, but the market at the time could not support two, let alone three, widebody long range aircraft, to say nothing of being unable to support three major manufacturers and both the DC-10 and L1011 went out of production fairly quickly. The AF bought DC-10s as airborne refueling aircraft, which is probably why flying one for freight is viable.
