How does it all work in the USA? Do you have some sort of "title" to the
vehicle? I once bought a Chevy Suburban here in Manitoba and received
the Texas title from the owner even though I did not need it. Here, the
vehicle registration form is part of the package that includes the
licence plate and the insurance (since we have a government run monopoly
insurance program). We are able to sell things like utility trailers
without much trouble. Most people seem unable to produce documentation
for things like utility trailers and the authorities permit us to
provide a bill of sale saying it is a homemade trailer and no one asks
many questions but a car of a truck requires that the form on the back
of the registration document be signed and provided to the buyer along
with the bill of sale. If you cannot find it, you have to go to an
authorized agent and pay to get a replacement registration document. We
had to do that when we were unable to find the papers for an old Toyota
4Runner that we sold. There may be some means of getting proper
paperwork for a vehicle if you cannot find the last registered owner but
it would no doubt be difficult and expensive.
