Yeah I actually don't know the details of how it works, but registration
on a a new car is expensive and it drops each year.

It seems not strictly based on age though, because registration for my
'83 300D costs more than all my other cars except the Volvo XC90, even
though it's 26 years older. I should ask them about that I guess. Here's
what I'm looking at for next month (excise tax portion in paren)

Year: 1979 Make: MEB Model: 300SD $73.35 ($12.00)

Year: 1983 Make: MEB Model: 300DT $103.35 ($42.00)

Year: 2003 Make: FOR Model: FOCUS SE $73.35 ($12.00)

Year: 2004 Make: NIS Model: FRONTIER XE V6 $91.35 ($21.00)

Year: 2006 Make: HON Model: ELEMENT EX $82.35 ($21.00)

Year: 2009 Make: VLV Model: XC90 3.2 $103.35 ($42.00)

The Frontier costs more than the Element because it's a truck, which has
other fees, even though the excise tax is the same.
