I've been slowly adding insulation to our attic. This week I plan to go get the rest, I've got a bunch of Home Depot gift cards... I've been using unfaced fiberglass laid perpendicular to the existing fiberglass. The rafters are 2x6 so like R19, I'm adding R30. Even having done only half the house I can tell the difference in the heating bill.

Made a very noticeable difference. We use wood auxiliary heat, maybe 5 cords a year. I've never paid a dime for any of it. Free downed trees, or I cut off of our acreage in a pinch. I dislike sealed multipane windows, they're all ticking time bomb$. For a brief time you could get NON-sealed 2-pane windows. They never fail. Ours are Pella, but I was told, perhaps by somebody who doesn't really know, that this was no longer possible. There was only a percent or three difference on the energy efficiency, but they're 'forever' windows. You can't begin to imagine how much I loathe the 'subscription model' that seems to be everywhere now.
